Amazon Employees Reportedly Increasing AI Tool Usage to Signal Productivity
Amazon employees are reportedly increasing their use of internal artificial intelligence tools amid growing workplace pressure around AI adoption, according to media reports.
The company has expanded deployment of an internal AI platform known as “MeshClaw,” which allows employees to build AI agents capable of automating tasks and interacting with workplace software systems. The tools are designed to assist with coding, email management and other routine work activities.
Reports suggest some employees believe AI usage is becoming an informal indicator of performance within the company, even though Amazon has reportedly told staff that AI adoption metrics will not directly affect appraisals.
As a result, some workers are allegedly generating additional AI-related activity to increase their “token consumption,” a measurement tied to the volume of data processed by AI systems. Employees reportedly fear lower usage levels could create the perception that they are not actively participating in the company’s AI-driven work culture.
The reports also indicate that internal usage leaderboards have been introduced in certain teams, while the company aims for a large majority of developers to use AI tools regularly each week.
MeshClaw is reportedly inspired by “OpenClaw,” an autonomous AI agent platform that allows users to run AI assistants capable of independently completing tasks across applications and software environments.
Amazon has been expanding AI investments aggressively as part of its broader technology strategy. Reports indicate the company is expected to invest nearly $200 billion this year, largely focused on AI infrastructure and data centre expansion.
