Meta Restructures Reality Labs, Rebranding 1,000 Employees as ‘AI Builders’
Meta Platforms Inc. is reportedly overhauling its Reality Labs division, a move that signals a fundamental shift toward artificial intelligence-led operations. The restructuring affects approximately 1,000 employees and introduces a new organizational model designed to integrate AI into the company’s core internal workflows.
Shift to “AI-Native” Roles and Pods
As part of the reorganization, Meta is replacing traditional job titles with new, AI-centric designations. Employees within the affected group will now transition into three primary roles:
AI Builder: The foundational role for individual contributors.
AI Pod Lead: Leaders responsible for the daily execution of smaller units.
AI Org Lead: Managers who oversee larger groups and handle administrative duties like performance reviews.
The new structure organizes staff into “pods”—small, outcome-focused teams that cut across traditional functional silos such as engineering and design. This cross-disciplinary approach allows for greater flexibility, where an engineer might contribute to design tasks depending on the specific project goal.
Zuckerberg’s Vision for a “Flatter” Organization
This overhaul aligns with CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s broader “Year of Efficiency” philosophy, aimed at creating a flatter organization with fewer layers of management. Zuckerberg has previously suggested that advances in AI could dramatically boost individual productivity, potentially allowing a single highly-skilled person to deliver outcomes that previously required large teams.
“Our ultimate goal is to drive a step change in engineering productivity and product quality,” a leaked internal memo stated. “To achieve this, we’re fundamentally rewiring how we operate.”
Operational Changes and AI Integration
Under this new model, management functions are also expected to evolve. While Org Leads still handle appraisals and promotions, these processes will be increasingly supported by internal AI systems, reflecting Meta’s growing reliance on automation for administrative decision-making.
While Meta recently conducted a separate round of layoffs across various divisions—including Reality Labs—the company clarified that this specific restructuring is a strategic realignment rather than a cost-cutting measure. The move is positioned as a long-term shift to improve collaboration and product quality through an AI-driven organizational framework.
