Oracle Global Layoffs: 12,000 Jobs Cut in India Amid AI Infrastructure Pivot

Oracle Corporation has reportedly executed one of the largest workforce reductions in its history, impacting approximately 30,000 employees globally. India has been disproportionately affected by the move, with an estimated 12,000 workers—nearly 40% of the company’s local workforce—losing their jobs overnight.
A “Cold-Blooded” Execution
The layoffs were characterized by their suddenness and clinical execution. Thousands of employees across India, the U.S., Canada, and Mexico reported receiving termination emails from “Oracle Leadership” as early as 6:00 AM IST on March 31 and April 1, 2026.
According to employee accounts on social media and professional forums:

Instant Disconnection: Access to internal systems, including Slack, Zoom, VPN, and building badges, was revoked almost immediately after the emails were sent.

No Prior Warning: Many affected staff, including those with over 20 years of service, received no prior communication from HR or direct managers.

Widespread Impact: The cuts have hit major tech hubs in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune, with some teams reportedly seeing their headcount halved.

Funding the $156 Billion AI Dream
Industry analysts at TD Cowen suggest the layoffs, which represent roughly 18% of Oracle’s 162,000-person global workforce, are a strategic maneuver to reallocate capital. Oracle is currently pivoting from a traditional software model to a capital-intensive infrastructure provider.
The restructuring is expected to free up between $8 billion and $10 billion in annual cash flow. These funds are reportedly earmarked for the construction of massive AI data centers and the procurement of high-performance chips to compete with hyperscale rivals like AWS and Microsoft Azure. This shift is part of a broader $156 billion investment in AI infrastructure.
The Human Cost
While Oracle’s net income recently jumped nearly 95% to $6.13 billion, the human toll of this “pivot” is stark. Viral reports have highlighted the plight of long-term veterans, including one account of a 20-year employee battling cancer who lost his health insurance alongside his role.
Severance packages are being offered via DocuSign, typically including pay based on years of service and notice pay. However, reports indicate that in many cases, these benefits are contingent upon employees technically “resigning voluntarily.”
