Odisha Plans Major Tourism Expansion Aimed at Creating 15 Lakh Jobs
The Government of Odisha has unveiled an ambitious tourism expansion plan that is expected to generate employment for nearly 15 lakh people across the state. The initiative includes the development of 15 tourist destinations and aligns with the state’s long-term vision of Viksit Odisha by 2036.
The objective of the plan is to position Odisha as one of Asia’s leading eco-cultural tourism hubs over the next decade. To achieve this, the state government intends to strengthen tourism infrastructure, diversify tourism offerings, and attract a higher number of domestic and international visitors.
Tourism has been identified as a key sector for inclusive growth, as it can create large-scale employment opportunities for local communities, particularly individuals from low-income backgrounds. The expansion is also expected to provide a platform to showcase Odisha’s distinctive culture, traditions, handicrafts, and cuisine.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi highlighted the initiative during the inauguration of the seventh edition of the Konark Eco Retreat along the Puri–Konark marine drive. He noted that eco-tourism has already played a significant role in boosting local economies.
Odisha’s nature-based eco-retreats at Bhitarkanika, Daringbadi, Sonapur, Satkosia, and Konark have contributed to livelihood generation while promoting sustainable tourism. According to the state government, some of these eco-retreats will also be used to host state-level meetings in the future.
Officials believe that eco-retreats offer a balanced model of development by creating employment, raising awareness about environmental conservation, and generating economic activity without harming natural ecosystems.
