Lufthansa Plans Workforce Reduction of About 4,000 Jobs by 2030

German airline Lufthansa is planning to reduce its workforce by roughly four per cent, which amounts to around 4,000 jobs over the next five years. Reports indicate that administrative and operational roles are expected to be the most affected. The move comes as the country faces high unemployment and economic challenges, including competition from China, rising energy costs, and slower technology adoption.
Lufthansa Group employs about 103,000 people globally across its subsidiaries, including Swiss International Airlines, Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and recently acquired ITA Airways. The company has also revised its operating margin target from eight per cent to 10 per cent as part of its financial goals for 2028–2030.
As part of this restructuring, Lufthansa aims to eliminate redundancies and focus on activities deemed essential for future operations. The airline also plans to increase efficiency by adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
Earlier this year, in January, Lufthansa had announced plans to expand its workforce by at least 10,000 employees, with over half expected to be hired in Germany. These roles were to be distributed across operations, technical, and administrative departments, including ground staff and flight attendants for its subsidiary airlines.
