Indian-origin man in New York charged with alleged $50,000 job fraud
New York: U.S. authorities have charged Mehul Goswami, a 39-year-old resident of Colonie, New York, for allegedly holding two full-time jobs at the same time and misusing over $50,000 in taxpayer funds.
According to official statements, Goswami was employed remotely by the New York State Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) when he reportedly accepted another full-time position with GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturer based in Malta, New York, in March 2022. Investigators allege that he performed duties for the private company during hours he was expected to work for the state.
The case was uncovered following a joint investigation by the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Inspector General’s Office. Authorities said the inquiry revealed a pattern of overlapping employment, resulting in Goswami receiving two salaries concurrently.
Officials described the matter as a violation of public trust, emphasizing the importance of accountability and integrity among government employees. They stated that the alleged misuse of public resources undermines confidence in state institutions.
Goswami was arraigned in Malta Town Court last week and released on his own recognizance pending trial. He has been charged with grand larceny in the second degree, a Class C felony under New York law, which carries a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to investigating and prosecuting cases involving the misuse of public funds, noting that individuals found guilty of such offenses will face appropriate legal action.
