Citigroup Makes AI Training Mandatory for 1.75 Lakh Employees Globally

Citigroup has made artificial intelligence (AI) training compulsory for most of its global workforce, underlining the growing importance of AI skills in the banking sector. The programme covers approximately 1.75 lakh employees across 80 locations, out of the bank’s total headcount of around 2.29 lakh.
The training focuses on helping employees interact effectively with AI tools by teaching them how to craft accurate prompts. Modules use adaptive learning technology, allowing beginners more time to complete the course while advanced users progress faster.
Citi has reported high engagement with AI internally this year, with employees entering millions of prompts into its platforms. The bank highlighted that AI helps staff complete tasks in minutes that previously took hours.
This mandatory programme is part of a broader upskilling initiative, with additional modules planned to enhance employees’ understanding of AI applications.
The move reflects a wider trend in the financial sector, where institutions such as JPMorgan, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo are investing in AI literacy for their workforces. Training aims to ensure that AI tools are used responsibly and effectively across client servicing, risk management, and operational functions.
