Air India Express Suspends Pilot After Alleged Assault on Passenger at Delhi Airport
Air India Express has constituted an external enquiry panel to investigate an incident in which one of its pilots allegedly assaulted a passenger at Terminal 1 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport last week. The airline has strongly condemned the pilot’s behaviour.
The pilot, identified as Virender Sejwal, was off duty at the time of the incident and was travelling on another airline. He was immediately suspended, and a show-cause notice was issued seeking an explanation for his conduct.
According to the airline, the enquiry will be conducted in accordance with prevailing labour laws, as pilots are classified as workmen under Indian law.
The alleged victim, Ankit Dewan, shared photographs of his injured face on social media following the incident. As per reports, the altercation began when Dewan objected to certain staff members allegedly bypassing a queue at the airport. Sejwal reportedly intervened, questioned Dewan’s ability to read signage indicating that the entry point was reserved for staff, and subsequently assaulted him. Dewan later posted images of his injuries along with a photograph of Sejwal on social media platforms.
The incident has been taken seriously by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which has directed Air India Express to ground the pilot. Separate investigations are currently being carried out by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
Air India Express has stated that disciplinary action will be taken against the pilot once the investigations are completed and reports are submitted by the concerned authorities.
